Epithets

In The Ditty of Carmeana, after Lance gets his quest to Rescue the Princess™, the king gives him three epithets: The Chosen One™, The Glorious Hero™, and Destiny’s Ward. Lance had already come up with the terms himself before meeting the king, but the king was the one who made it official when he announced Lance to the kingdom, which is why characters sometime refer to him using those epithets.

I had been doing some writing on a new sidequest in the University of Chingaim Library, which has a bunch of characters and many of them use the epithets, so I’ve been thinking about this lately. It actually matters which term they use.

It’s not foolproof, but generally speaking, if somebody calls Lance “The Chosen One™”, then they are either mocking him, or being condescending. If somebody calls Lance “The Glorious Hero™”, they are being neutral or respectful, and if someone calls him “Destiny’s Ward” (and are not Tabitha), they are being benevolent.

Incidentally, Destiny’s Ward does not use an ironic trademark sign, whereas the other two do. It’s because “Destiny’s Ward” is not a cliche. The things marked with a ™ in the game (that are not actual in-universe trademarks) are all overused and overdone cliches of the genre, Rescuing the Princess™, the Chosen One™, and so on. But Destiny’s Ward is something I made up based on the dialogue, so it is not a cliche. (Although in an Internet search I did see a few people who used the term for something or other before me.)
